Functional Appliances
Functional appliances in dentistry are devices worn in the mouth to correct bite problems or jaw growth issues in children and teenagers. They work by applying gentle forces to the jaws and teeth, which helps to guide their growth and development. Examples of functional appliances include the Herbst appliance and the Twin Block appliance. These appliances are typically used in conjunction with traditional orthodontic treatment, such as braces, to correct bite problems and improve the overall appearance of the teeth.
Consultation
The first step is to have a consultation with an orthodontist, who will examine the patient's bite and jaw growth and determine if a functional appliance is the appropriate treatment.
Custom Fabrication
If a functional appliance is recommended, the orthodontist will take impressions of the patient's teeth and jaw, which will be used to custom-fabricate the appliance.
Fitting
Once the appliance is ready, the patient will return to the orthodontist's office for a fitting. The orthodontist will make any necessary adjustments to ensure a proper fit and comfortable wear.
Monitoring
The patient will be required to wear the functional appliance for a certain period of time, typically several months. The orthodontist will monitor the patient's progress and make any necessary adjustments to the appliance.
Follow-up Care
After the treatment period is complete, the patient will typically continue with traditional orthodontic treatment, such as braces, to complete the correction of the bite. The orthodontist will also provide follow-up care to ensure the bite remains stable.
